Obituary

ELKHART — Mary Helen Billings, 88, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 24, 2011, at Hubbard Hill Estates. She was born on Jan. 23, 1923, in Elkhart to the late Tracy Warner and Helen Beatrice (Owen) Whitaker. On Jan. 19, 1945, she married Dr. Elmer Ray Billings; they celebrated 65 years together before he passed on April 3, 2010. Surviving are a son; Brad A. (Sally) Billings of Elkhart; three daughters, Beverly A. (John) Slayter of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Barbara A. (Steve) Russo of Zionsville and Beryl A. Billings and her fiancé, Randy Stone, of Elkhart. Also surviving are her grandchildren Ben (Erin) Slayter of Williamston, Mich., Megan (Jeremy) Slayter-Jubenville of Kalamazoo, Mich., Margaret Russo of Cincinnati, Eric (Courtney) Freedline of Elkhart, Nic Freedline and his companion, Ed Elliott, of New York, N.Y., Drew Billings of Terre Haute, and Evan Billings of Elkhart, as well as her twin great-grandsons Cameron and Ethan Freedline, at home, and her newest great-granddaughter, Annalise Rebecca Jubenville, at home. A son, Barry Ray Billings, and her brother, Burke E. Whitaker, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Billings was a graduate of the Indiana School of Nursing, a real estate broker and past president of the Elkhart County Medical Alliance. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Elkhart Art League, patron of the Midwest Museum of American Art and Women of the Moose. She was also a former member of the Elcona Country Club, Four Arts Club, Elkhart General Hospital Auxiliary, Elks Lodge, a Delta Delta Delta sorority alumna and was a volunteer for Sister Virginia's Adult Basic Education Center.

Friends and family may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011 at the Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. A service to celebrate the life of Mary Helen will follow at 3 p.m. The Rev. Daniel Repp will officiate. In keeping with her wishes, cremation will follow at Altera Cremation Services, and she will be buried along with her husband at a later date in Rice Cemetery.
