UNION, Mich. -- Marion W. Wolkins, 98, of Union, passed away at 1:50 p.m. Monday (June 27, 2011) at Greenleaf Living Center in Elkhart, Ind., after a brief illness.
He was born in Union to John and Eunice (Blake) Wolkins on Dec. 10, 1912. He married Lucile G. Miles on May 3, 1941. She died in Union in 1988.
Surviving are his daughter, Elaine C. Fuller of Elkhart; a son, Jerry M. (Judy) Wolkins of Union; a grandson, Brian P. (Anna Kliewer) Fuller of Stuttgart, Germany; a granddaughter, Darla M. (Chris) Wolkins-Czanstke of San Diego, Calif.; and his longtime companion, Idella Sensenbaugh of Elkhart.
Two sisters, Inez Wolkins and Lois Fisher, as well as two brothers, Johnny and Lee Wolkins, preceded Marion in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church, 53013 C.R. 19, Bristol, Ind., with visitation there one hour prior. Burial will follow services in Zion Cemetery, across the street. Pastor Karen Strietelmeier will officiate, and military graveside honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honor Guard and Osceola American Legion 308. Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart is assisting with arrangements.
Marion owned a marl pit (a calcium-rich mineral-based agricultural soil enrichment product similar to lime) in Bristol and hauled marl to area farms from 1941 to 1985. He was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, a 1932 graduate of Bristol High School, and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater on the fuel tanker USS Sabine. He earned five Battle Stars during his military career.
