Maria J. Johnson, 70, of Elkhart, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Elkhart General Hospital. She was born in Jackson, MI on January 27, 1954, to the late Clyde T. and Beatrice I. (Garlick) Johnson.

Maria is also preceded in death by her great granddaughter, Faya Watson and her faithful canine companion, Bear. She is survived by her daughter, Tonya Johnson; 3 grandchildren, Eluvia Johnson, Betty Malone, Shawntavia Anderson; great grandchildren, Issac Rhoads and Raelynn Watson; sisters, Myrtle Davidson, Bonnie Rose, Kathleen (Danny) George; brother, Calvin Sanford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Maria's wishes, cremation was chosen and will take place at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart. She will be laid to rest on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in Prairie Street Cemetery where she will be reunited with her mother, Beatrice.

On Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 11:00 am, food and fellowship will be held at The Salvation Army Hall, 300 N. Main Street, Elkhart, IN 46516

A family celebration of life service will take place at a later date.

Maria worked for ADEC for several years before retiring and was a member of the Salvation Army in Elkhart. She was a member of Elkhart Temple $14, Pythian Sisters. She was a devoted caregiver to her sister, Bonnie, and enjoyed the company of her furry friend, Bear. Though she kept to herself, Maria liked to have fun and made the occasional witty joke from time to time. She will be missed by her loving family.
