ELKHART — Mrs. Marguerite McFarley, 85, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully after an extended illness Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at 11:48 a.m. at Elkhart General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Sumiton, Ala., to the late Marvin and Martha (Harris) Miles.
She married Jesse McFarley on June 9, 1950, in Sumiton. He passed away in Elkhart in 2003.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Margaret (Ernest) Harris and Sharon Starks, both of Elkhart, and Brenda McFarley of South Bend; sons Fred (Shirley) and Richard (Lisa) McFarley, both of Elkhart; her sister, Frances (Willie) Carter of Elkhart; brothers Benny Miles of Chicago and Bill (Sadie) Miles of Jasper, Ala.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were five brothers and sisters.
A celebration of Marguerite's life will be at Community Missionary Baptist Church, 228 Chapman Ave., Elkhart, on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. and funeral services beginning at noon. Burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery. Pastor Michael Carpenter will officiate the services, which have been entrusted to the care and direction of Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart.
Marguerite was a homemaker who enjoyed traveling and collecting mementos from places she visited, as well as spending time with her grandchildren when she was home. She was a member of Canaan Baptist Church and the NAACP, and one of her proudest moments came several years ago when she personally met the Rev. Jesse Jackson at an NAACP event in Chicago.
