ELKHART -- Madeline "Mattie" Bunting, 63, of Elkhart, died at 3:47 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 17, 2010) in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.
She was born April 18, 1946, in Hometown, W.Va., to Elza and Zanie Elizabeth (Lovejoy) Rhodes. On Dec. 11, 2000, she married Archie Louis Bunting in Elkhart. He died Jan. 30, 2002.
Mrs. Bunting is survived by two sons, Delbert (Heather) Morris of Elkhart and Rick (Aly) Rhodes of Grove Port, Ohio; one daughter, Lori (Travis) Norvell of New Orleans; eight grandchildren; and three sisters, Martha (Otis) Harrison of Bancroft, W.Va., Cora Rhodes of Nitro, W.Va., and Ruby (Bob) Woods of Lynchburg, Va.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Rhodes, Belby Max and Mertle West; and seven brothers, Arnold, Okey, Dencil, George, Farlay, Walter and Basil Rhodes.
Mrs. Bunting worked as a maintenance worker at the Elkhart Police Department from 1981 until 1988. Prior to retirement, she worked at LaSalle Lighting for five and a half years. She attended Elkhart Community Baptist Church and enjoyed volunteering at the Salvation Army, shopping, going to the casino, gospel singing and being involved in church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Friends may call Friday from 4 p.m. until the 6 p.m. funeral service, all at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor Edward Ritchie of Elkhart Community Baptist Church will officiate. Cremation will follow the service.
