Obituary

Lucia Linda "Lucy" Jenkins, 81, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 6:51 a.m. at Waterford Crossing in Goshen, following a brief illness.

Born on March 25, 1944, in New York City to the late Bartholomew "Bart" and Loretta (Connelley) Corsentino, Lucy grew up with the quick wit, toughness, and unapologetic sparkle that only a true New Yorker could possess. She was never one to back down from a challenge or miss a chance to tell a good story—especially if it got a laugh.

In 2000, Lucy married the love of her life, Fremont T. "Monty" Jenkins, in Warsaw, Indiana. Theirs was a union built on humor, devotion, and mutual admiration—two hearts that somehow found each other and stayed perfectly in sync. They remained very much in love, right down to the last detail; Monty preceded Lucy in death by exactly one month, proving once again that he could never stand to be too far away from her.

Lucy is survived by her beloved sons, Bartholomew "Bart" Libert of Goshen and Nicholas "Nick" Libert of Chicago, both whom inherited her sharp intellect and her ability to charm a room within minutes. They were the great loves of her life—though their family dog Charley might've argued for equal billing.

Though Lucy's life took her down many paths—educator, businesswoman, and lifelong learner—her proudest professional chapter was as president of Libert Films International, a film production and distribution company based in St. Petersburg, Florida. She had a natural flair for storytelling and an eye for the dramatic (and not just on screen).

Lucy's heart was enormous, especially when it came to animals. She volunteered for years at various humane societies and even served as president of the Knox County Humane Society in Vincennes. One can only assume her home was a revolving door of furry, feathered, and sometimes unexpected guests, all of whom were spoiled rotten and adored. Even the backyard birds and squirrels ate better than most people.

A devoted wife and mother, Lucy showed her love in simple but sincere ways—through countless home-cooked meals, surprise baked treats, and hand-crafted gifts that always managed to be both beautiful and practical. She had a mischievous sense of humor that could defuse any tension, and her quick comebacks were legendary. If there was a room full of laughter, chances are Lucy was at the center of it—probably holding court with a glass of wine in one hand and a twinkle in her eye.  A graduate of Indiana University with a Masters degree in English Literature and a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was a firce conversationalist and civic pride was in her blood.

Lucy was a longtime member of the Elkhart Valley Church of the Brethren, where she remained steadfast in her Christian faith. She carried that faith quietly but firmly, leading by example through her generosity, compassion, and endless capacity to forgive (even when she probably shouldn't have).

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Lucy will rejoin her beloved Monty during a graveside memorial service at Violett Cemetery in Goshen on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. Together again—just the way she planned it.

Lucy will be remembered for her warmth, her humor, her fierce independence, and her gift for making every person—and every creature—feel like they mattered. She lived fully, loved deeply, and never missed an opportunity to laugh at herself or the world around her.
