Obituary
ELKHART — On Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, beloved aunt Lorraine Mae "Rainey" Erbe, 87. passed away at Valley View Health Care Center in Elkhart.
Lorraine was born Aug. 10, 1924, in Jordan, Mont., the middle child of five born to the late Ralph and Ida Mae (Davis) Erbe. She was a 1942 graduate of Angola High School and managed the Greyhound Post House and the Hearth Tea Room in Angola until 1952. She and her mother, Ida Mae, also ran a boarding house for Tri-State College students in Angola.
After moving to Elkhart, they rented rooms and hosted many guests and banquets in their home while Lorraine attended Elkhart University. In 1952 she graduated as a laboratory technician and began her 36-year career at the Elkhart Clinic, retiring in 1989. In 1964 she bought a cottage on Baldwin Lake, and in the early 1970s she helped manage and renovate the Hollywood Shores Resort with Ralph and Laverne Erbe and their children.
Lorraine is survived by her sister, Shirley Overman of Tehachapi, Calif.; 12 nieces and nephews and their spouses; and numerous grandnieces and -nephews and great-grandniece and -nephews. Rainey was adored and loved by her family and never hesitated to travel across the U.S. to visit them. She will be best remembered as the family's binding tie, historian and an avid photographer, as she made an effort to capture every family event on film.
Two brothers, Roscoe and Ralph Jr., and sister Eileen Buckley have preceded her in death.
Private family gravesides services will be held at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in New Haven. Arrangements are under the direction of Billings Funeral Home Elkhart. Memorials may be made to The Center for Hospice Care or Alzheimer's Association.
