ELKHART — Loretta Jean Chism, 80, of Elkhart, passed to her rest Monday, April 4, at Courtyard Healthcare Center in Goshen, surrounded by her family.
She was born June 15, 1935, in Detroit, to the late Edward R. and Florence (Howcroft) Pfeiffer.
On Aug. 28, 1954, she married the love of her life, Warren C. Chism, in Hillsdale, Mich. He died Nov. 2, 2013, in Elkhart.
Loretta is survived by a son, David Warren (Margaret) Chism of Grand Rapids, Mich.; daughter Joselyn Raye (Earl) Huxhold of Elkhart; four grandchildren, Blake Edward Hill, Alexandra S. (Jeremy) Stacy, John "Jack" Chism and Justin (Marie) Huxhold; five great-grandchildren, Finn, Winn, Wren and Witt Stacy, and Susan Rose Huxhold; a goddaughter, Heidi Jean Barnes; and many nieces and nephews.
Loretta worked as a dietary director for more than 20 years in health care, retiring in 1982. She worked at Fountainview and St. Mary's of Notre Dame. She was the former owner of Calico Kitchen Catering.
Loretta loved to travel with Warren and spend time with her family. She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Elkhart.
Friends and family may gather for one hour prior to the 11 a.m. celebration of life service Saturday, April 9, at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 3300 Benham Ave., Elkhart. Pastor Karen Strietelmeier will officiate.
In honoring Loretta's wishes, cremation has taken place. She will be laid to rest next to Warren in Evergreen Cemetery in Osseo, Mich., at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request memorials to Lutheran Church of the Redeemer or Heartland Hospice, 230 W. Catalpa Drive, Suite D, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
