GOSHEN -- Lindsay D. Smith, 73, of Goshen, died at 9:40 a.m. Friday (June 19, 2009) in Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born Sept. 6, 1935, in Shingleton, Mich., to Earl and Melba (Hartwick) Smith. On March 17, 1963, he married Wilma Ann Van Gilder in Wall Lake, Mich.
She survives along with three sons, Jeffery A. and Steven D. Smith, both of Goshen, and Randy (Heather) Smith of Indianapolis; one daughter, Sherry A. Smith of Elkhart; five grandchildren; and one brother, John Smith of Grayling, Mich.
One sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Smith was a master locksmith and the owner of Lindsay's Locks, Goshen, for nearly 40 years. He was mechanically inclined in everything from door locks to car engines and had a master's degree in mechanical engineering. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and rooting for Jeff Gordon.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved to fish and hunt with a bow. He successfully competed in archery tournaments all over the region. Mr. Smith was a former member of the Goshen VFW 985 and the NRA, and was a charter and lifelong member of Bass Masters.
He served in the U.S. Army Armored Division as a staff sergeant in Korea, where he earned several medals including the Purple Heart.
No formal service or visitation has been scheduled. Cremation has taken place and the remains will be taken to his birthplace in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where a small outdoor ceremony is pending.
