He was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Jimtown to Ernest and Agnes Shaum. He married Mary Elizabeth Stanley, who died in 1995. He married Phyllis J. Wise on Oct. 24, 2003, in South Bend.
She survives along with two stepdaughters, Marilyn K. Weaver of Elkhart and Charlene J. Personette of Mishawaka; six stepgrandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Larry (Peg) Shaum of Edwardsburg and Loren (Gail) Shaum of Syracuse.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Peg R. Shaum.
Family and friends may visit between 2 and 4 and 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. They may also call an hour before the 10 a.m. Wednesday service at the funeral home, with the Rev. Tim Terrell of St. Mark's United Methodist Church of Goshen officiating. Burial will follow at Olive Street Cemetery.
The Rev. Shaum was a graduate of Jimtown High School and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He graduated from Asbury College and the Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Ky., and was also a graduate of the Famous Writer's School. He began serving in the ministry in 1941, serving United Methodist Churches in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. He was a member of the West Ohio United Methodist Conference and founded the 20th Century Home for Boys near Sugar Grove, Ohio, in the late 1960s.
He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Goshen and enjoyed carpentry, woodworking and fishing.
