ELKHART — Lester L. Mahar, 75, of Elkhart, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, of natural causes, at the Center for Hospice Care Elkhart.
Lester was born June 2, 1942, in South Bend, to Robert Lewis and Joyce Marie (Larson) Mahar.
He is survived by his three sons, Robert Mahar, John (Heather Robinson) Mahar and Michael (Teresa) Mahar; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Bowe; stepfather Ray Eagles; father Robert L. Mahar; and two brothers, Robert L. and Raymond L Mahar.
Lester worked for the Selmer Corp. for 30 years, retiring in 1994.
He started as the night watchman and ended up working in almost every department in the plant.
Lester enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a great storyteller.
He served in the Air Force and was a long-time member of the United Auto Workers Union.
He will be missed by his faithful Chihuahua "Hobbit".
Services celebrating Lester's life will begin at 5 p.m. with visitation starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Billings Funeral Home.
Pastor Tim Fisher of Crossroads Community Church will officiate.
Per his wishes, cremation will follow, with burial at a later date in Prairie Street Cemetery.
The family kindly request memorials to Riley Children's Foundation, Ronald McDonald House or Shriner's Hospital for Children.
