ELKHART — Laura J. Stack, 97, was surrounded by her children as she passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior and was reunited with her loving husband, Carl J. Stack on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017.
Carl and Laura were united in marriage April 28, 1946, in Wakarusa.
They were separated only by his death on Aug. 22, 2015.
She was born Dec. 9, 1920, in Wakarusa, to Abram S. and Edith (Carroll) Lehman.
She is survived by her children, Susan Rockenbaugh, Ronald (Carol Lee Redman) Stack, Gregory (Sally Reedy) Stack, Richard (Susan Bollero) Stack, of Elkhart, Nancy (John) Kilmer of Columbus, New Jersey, Betsy (Danny) Kratzer and Sandy (Tony) Zann, all of Elkhart; 33 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law Donald Stack.
Laura was preceded in death a granddaughter; great-granddaughter; a son-in-law, Steven Rockenbaugh; brothers Nelson, Robert and Paul Lehman; sisters Katherine Kulp, Helen Cook, Marie Lehman, Frances Metzler and Charlotte Shriner.
Laura had a quiet, sweet nature that is remembered by all who met her.
Over the years her hobbies included sewing, reading and working puzzles.
She taught Sunday school for many years at First Baptist Church.
Her most remarkable accomplishment was her role as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She lead by example and loved without condition.
Laura was a graduate of Wakarusa High School and the Elkhart Business School.
She worked at NIBCO where she met her husband.
Services celebrating the life of Laura J. Stack will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart.
Pastor Phil Byars of First Baptist Church will officiate.
Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
The family wishes to offer their heartfelt gratitude to the staff, residents and their families (past and present) of Greenleaf Health Campus for their loving care and support given to Laura for the past two and half years.
The building became home and the people became family.
They also wish to thank the doctors and staff at Elkhart General Hospital for care and kindness given to Laura.
