Obituary

Larry Lee Leininger

Larry Lee Leininger, 79, of Elkhart, passed away from extended illness in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at 12:50 p.m. His passing marks the end of a life that was characterized by devotion—to his country, his family, his work, and his many interests. Larry was born in Elkhart on March 28, 1947, the son of the late Frederick J. Leininger and Virginia (Wolfe) Laughman. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Amber M. Leininger, and by his brother, Jeffrey Laughman. On August 3, 1997, Larry was united in marriage with Jan (Janice) Kay (Hammon) Miller, and together they shared 29 years of marriage.

A Patriot Who Answered His Country's Call

Larry served in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country in Vietnam. He attained the rank of E-4 as a mine sweeper.

A Lifetime of Work and Pride

Following his military service, Larry returned home and was employed by Gemeinhardt and Conn-Selmer for nearly 35 years, where he worked in the intricate craft of making flutes.

Family Was at the Center of Larry's World

Larry was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a grandfather and great-grandfather who took genuine pride in watching his family grow. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his children's and grandchildren's athletic and extracurricular activities.

He is survived by his wife, Jan; daughter Corie L. (Brent) Kulp of Goshen; sons Chad W. (Lora Johnson) Miller of Elkhart and Brett E. (Sandy) Miller of Lakeville; brother James Laughman of Granger; grandchildren Connor Kulp; Aubree and Courtney Miller; Madalyn, Emma, Ava, Dylan Miller; Alex (Jake) Laytardt, T.J. (Kaitlyn) Bayer, Jalen Bayer, Adrianna (Jordan) Arch, and 8 great-grandchildren.

The Hoosiers, Bobby Knight and a Few Other Passions

Larry was an Indiana University basketball fan, particularly during the legendary Bobby Knight years. Larry also had a fondness for Elvis Presley, Notre Dame football, and followed NASCAR.

A Man Who Loved His Home, His Yard and His garage "Man Cave"

He also enjoyed attending church whenever he could and spent time at the DAV while it was still open, maintaining connections with fellow veterans and friends.

A Life Well Lived, A Legacy Well Loved

Larry was many things throughout his 79 years: a soldier, a veteran, a craftsman, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, a sports fan. Larry was a man who loved his people. For those who knew Larry best, his absence will be felt in all the familiar places.

In accordance with Larry's wishes, cremation will take place followed by a graveside service at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart. His final journey will include the honors he so richly earned, with military honors rendered by the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard, the Elkhart County Funeral Honor Guard and the Northern Indiana Patriot Guard Riders.

Cemetery date and times are currently pending and will be updated soon.

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart have been assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Center for Hospice Care of South Bend. The family will be holding a private memorial service.
