ELKHART -- King A. Dancler Jr., 64, of 1807 Oakland Ave., died at 3:35 p.m. Friday (Jan. 11, 2008) at home after a battle with cancer.

He was born June 9, 1943, in New Madrid, Mo., to King A. and Areedia (Young) Dancler Sr. He married Carolyn L. Crenshaw on Nov. 25, 1968, at Canaan Baptist Church in Elkhart.

She survives along with one son, the Rev. King A. (Onjanette) Dancler III of South Bend; three daughters, Deborah, Makesha and Carmen Dancler, all of Elkhart; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Jearlean) Dancler of Sikeston, Mo.; and three sisters, Ruth (Robert) House of Elkhart, Jessie (John) Wilson of Sikeston and Jane Bobo of Benton Harbor, Mich.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elbert and John Dancler, and two sisters, Elsie Dooley and Mildred Dancler.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., and one hour prior to Saturday's 11 a.m. funeral service at Agape Missionary Baptist Church, 248 W. Wolf Ave. The Revs. King A. Dancler III and Dr. Dannell Brown will officiate. Burial with military honors by the U.S. Army honors burial detail will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery.

Mr. Dancler worked at Bayer Corp. for more than 32 years. He was a 1963 graduate of Jimtown High School, where he excelled and lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was inducted into the Elkhart County Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was a member of Agape Missionary Baptist Church, the Take Six Club and Elkhart Black Expo. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served with the 557th Military Police Co. from 1965 until his honorable discharge in 1967. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
