Obituary

ELKHART -- Kenneth E. Rose, 77, of Foster Avenue, died Wednesday (Nov. 8, 2006) in Elkhart General Hospital, following a short illness.

He was born Aug. 6, 1929, in Vienna, Ill., to Fredrick and Mattie (McCarver) Rose. On July 5, 1952, he married Betty Talbert in Hernando, Miss.

She survives along with one son, Kevin A. (Tracey) Rose of South Bend; seven grandchildren; one brother, Johnny (Adeline) Rose of Elkhart; and one sister, Gladys McKinzie of Elkhart.

He was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth E. Rose Jr.; and five sisters, Edith Hart, Geneva Bost, Alberta Bost, Margaret Kistler and Ethel Myrick.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Rice Cemetery in Elkhart. DAV Chapter 19 will conduct military honors. Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rose retired in 1988 from Challenger Manufacturing in Elkhart, where he worked for more than 10 years. He formerly worked for several years at Weiss Manufacturing, also in Elkhart. From 1955 to 1970, he was plant manager for Talbert Manufacturing, where he oversaw the construction of and then ran the new plants in Rensselaer and Hayward, Calif.

Mr. Rose was a Korean War veteran with the medical detachment of the 7th Infantry Division, serving from 1948 to 1952, when he was honorably discharged. He received the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), United Nations Service Medal and Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Service Stars. He was a member of VFW 5222 in Vienna and DAV Chapter 19 in Elkhart, where he served with the color guard. He enjoyed gardening and doing home improvements.
