Obituary

Kenneth Allen "Ken" Nelson, 77, of Elkhart, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born on April 16, 1947, in Elkhart, to the late Kenneth C. and Ora Bell (Stair) Nelson.

Ken is survived by his son, Justin N. Nelson of Elkhart; beloved cats, Dewey and Buddy; and a loving host of extended family, friends, and acquaintances.

In accordance with Ken's wishes, cremation has been chosen and no formal services are to be held. Entombment will occur at a later date at Rice Cemetery's Hope Mausoleum.

Ken graduated from Elkhart High School in 1965 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Geology from Ball State University in 1969.

Once out of college, Ken proudly enlisted in the US Marine Corps and was active from 1969 to 1972 as a First Lieutenant. During his years in the armed forces, Ken was stationed in Japan and the Mediterranean during the Vietnam War.

Back in the states, Ken was employed as a postal worker for USPS from 1973 to 2002, both taking care of delivering mail and being a window clerk. Following his retirement from the postal service, he chose to take up a part-time position at Barnes & Nobles.

In Ken's spare time, he enjoyed reading nonfiction novels, learning about war history and attending reenactments, and listening to classical music, at one time playing the trumpet in his high school band. In recent years, he also enjoyed spending time with his son, Justin, and together they would watch shows like On Patrol Live, The Rookies, and Chicago PD.

Ken, along with all the love and joy he shared, will be dearly missed by those whose hearts he touched throughout his life.
