He was born Aug. 25, 1946, in Warsaw to Carroll and Gladys (Keesling) Smith. He married Carolyn J. Reger on Dec. 10, 1967.

She survives along with one son, Christopher Smith of the Bronx, N.Y.; one daughter, Gretchen (Gabriel) Santiago of Goshen; one granddaughter; one brother, Philip (Sandy) Smith of Detroit; and one sister, Ruthann (Reuben) Soguilon of Las Vegas.

No visitation is planned. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Central Christian Church, Elkhart. Cremation will take place.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Ball State University and Thunderbird University in Arizona. He was a professor at Indiana University South Bend in the field of business and computers. He formerly taught at Ivy Tech and taught German at various high schools. He was privately employed in international marketing. He served in the U.S. Army.
