Kathy Lorraine Kovatch, 72, of Elkhart, passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. She was born on August 15, 1951, in Elkhart, to the late John and Mary Alice (Defreese) Kovatch.
Kathy is survived by her loving son, Nicholas "Nick" (Susanna Melone) Kovatch of South Bend; brother, Jon (Penny) Kovatch of Walkerton; beloved dog, Roadie; and a loving host of extended family, friends, and acquaintances.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Charles Kovatch.
In accordance with Kathy's wishes, cremation has been chosen. Services for Kathy will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Billings Funeral Home with visitation from 2 PM to 4 PM and a memorial service with military honors to follow beginning at 4 PM. Elder Karen Blake of the New Testament Bible Church will be officiating. Inurnment will occur at a later date at Prairie Street Cemetery's Veteran Towers.
Kathy honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1980 as a data entry clerk and classified information specialist, both in active duty and in the reserves.
Once honorably discharged from the military, Kathy continued her work as a data entry clerk, most recently working for Indiana Chair Frame Co. Before she retired, she also worked for the Concord Fire Department as a receptionist while also being the department's in-house mother and cook, something she was very proud of. After her retirement, she was a board member for Inova Credit Union for many years.
In her spare time, Kathy most notably enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, creating many memories for years to come. She also could always be found with a book in her hand or cooking up a delicious meal, such as her son's beloved favorite, sausage biscuits and gravy. In her younger years, she enjoyed going to the lake to fish.
Kathy will best be remembered as a loving mother who would do anything for her family, friends, and beloved pets, notably raising her son, Nick, all on her own. She was a loyal and kind soul who was always willing to listen and be there for others. Most importantly, she always talked about how thrilled she was to watch her family grow in size as the years went by.
Kathy, along with all the love and joy she shared, will be dearly missed by those whose hearts she touched throughout her life.
