IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Kathryn "Kay"
Elizabeth (Olsen) Horein
August 1, 1939 – April 19, 2023
Kathryn Elizabeth "Kay" Horein, 83, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully of natural causes at Elkhart General Hospital on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.
She was born on August 1, 1939, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Gordon M. and Mary K. (Parker) Olsen and went on to marry Terry L. Horein in Wakarusa on August 25, 1957. He passed away in Elkhart on December 9, 2017.
Surviving Kay are two daughters, Deborah (Steve) Kildow of Franklin, TN and Donna (Brett) Schrock of Dowelltown, TN; two sons, Douglas Horein of Elkhart and David (Celeste) Horein of Granger; two sisters, Marilynn Anson and Carol (Dan) Hemund, both of Elkhart; a brother, Dennis (Joy) Olsen of Osceola; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family, close friends, good neighbors and faithful church family.
Visitation and viewing will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart. Friends may also join the family for final viewing one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service on Monday, April 24, at Elkhart Seventh-day Adventist Church, 3601 E. Bristol Street. The Revs. Don Grulich and Throstur Thordarson will officiate. Cremation will follow.
Kay worked many years as a bookkeeper and secretary for the family's business, Terry Horein Builders in Granger. She also was a licensed realtor and received several awards and association titles over the years. Later in her career, she co-owned with her sister, Marilynn, an arts and crafts gift shop, Penny Lane, also in Granger.
However, Kay's real love was her family and she made it a point to spend as much time with them as she could. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as her many nieces, nephews and other extended family. Kay also held a special place in her heart for the many rescue dogs she had over the years.
Kay loved family game nights playing Euchre and Dominoes and going to see plays and musicals at the Bristol Opera House. She and Terry loved traveling to Brown County, Indiana, with members of their family, where she enjoyed the tranquility and beauty of the woods (including adventures in ziplining!) as well as the shops, food and crafts of Little Nashville.
Memorials may be given to the Elkhart Seventh-day Adventist Church, the SDA Christian School of South Bend or to the Faith Mission. Friends and family may also leave memories, condolences and pictures on Kay's obituary page on the Billings Funeral Home website.
