ELKHART — Karley Kay Young, 79, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 3, 2011, of natural causes following a brief stay at Golden Living Center - Fountainview.
Grandma Karley was born Aug. 22, 1932, in Elkhart to the late Vernon Alexander and Florence Matilda (Schuman) Scott. She married William Albert Young on Aug. 9, 1953, in Elkhart. He passed away on April 12, 1990.
Surviving are son Tim S. (Lisa) Young of Elkhart; daughter Susan (Doug) Bernacchi; four grandchildren, Annie Bernacchi and Jack, William and Tommy Bernacchi; brother Jon V. Scott of Elkhart; and several nieces and nephews.
Her sister, Jane Stephenson, preceded her in death.
She was a 1950 graduate of Elkhart High School and studied throughout her life. A proud Leo, Karley was first and foremost an astrologer, dispensing advice to clients and friends near and far. She also worked as a librarian at the Elkhart Public Library and also worked as a commercial artist with Drummond Advertising Agency in the 1960s and '70s. A lifelong Elkhart resident, she also lived in Michigan City for a number of years.
She was affectionately referred to as Grandma Dog Dog. She loved her pets even when her neighbors didn't.
Karley enjoyed shopping and sharing her sense of humor and uniqueness with all her friends, including Bill Lawson of Flint, Mich., who joined her later, after being widowed, as a significant friend. They wintered together for several years in Punta Gorda, Fla., until his death a few years ago. She was affiliated with Unity Church in South Bend and Punta Gorda, and was raised in First Methodist Church in Elkhart.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, where the service to celebrate her life will begin at noon. The Rev. Lem Joyner will officiate. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery.
