Julianne "Julie" (Kuhner) Scalise, 87, passed away early Saturday morning, May 24, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family at Esther's House, Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart. Julie was born

on February 4, 1938 in Sharon, Pennsylvania to the late Rudolph and Christine (Schuster) Kuhner. After graduating high school, Julie attended Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA and received her BA. She was a woman of great faith. Julie was a longtime member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and was a member and Past President of the Rosary Society. Julie loved the Lord and enjoyed sharing her love of Catholicism with the students of St. Thomas the Apostle School as a religious education teacher and substitute teacher. She was also an active member of the Immaculate Conception of Secular Franciscan Fraternity.

Julie was very active in the community as a member and Past President of the Elkhart County Right to Life, now Right to Life Michiana. Julie enjoyed taking care of the spring and summer flowers that surrounded her patio. She was an avid reader and a former freelance writer for the Elkhart Truth in the mid-1980's. In addition to sharing her creative writing talent, she entertained her family and many friends with a smart, witty sense of humor. Julie gave gratitude to God for her husband, children, grandchildren, friends, country, and laughter.

Julie met her loving husband of 63 and a half years, J. Lawrence "Larry" Scalise, during college and they married on October 14, 1961. They built a wonderful life together with their four children, Daniel (Kathy) Scalise, Christopher (Kimberly) Scalise, Gregory Scalise and Anne (Brett) Wolfe and five grandchildren, Joey and Drew Wolfe, Jack and Brady Scalise, Olivia Voros and one great-granddaughter, Odette. In addition to her parents, Julie was sadly preceded in death by her son, Daniel and his wife Kathy in January 2023, and son, Gregory in August of 2020.

We invite everyone to celebrate the life of Julie Scalise, starting with visitation from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart. The evening will conclude

with a Rosary being prayed. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. with visitation for 1 hour prior on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Rev. Robert "Bob" VanKempen will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Vincent Cemetery.
