ELKHART -- Judith E. Kooyenga, 70, of Elkhart, passed away at 5 a.m. Monday (Feb. 21, 2011) at her home after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 31, 1940, in Chicago, to Paul R. and Eleanor M. (Boggs) Sawyer. She married Richard D. Kooyenga on Sept. 18, 1964, in Chicago. He died in 1985.
Surviving are two daughters, Sherry C. "Colleen" (Tim) Cordes of Toledo, Ohio, and Renee D. Prescott of Elkhart; three sisters, Sharon M. (Al) Kelson of Pueblo, Colo., Paula L. Conner of Goshen and Sarah A. Sawyer of Orland Park, Ill.; a brother, Jeff Sawyer of Blue Island, Ill.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded by her parents.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart. The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, with visitation one hour prior, at Elkhart County Community Baptist Church, 23805 Sunnyside Avenue, Elkhart. Pastor Ed Ritchie will officiate. Burial will follow at 3:45 p.m. at Beverly Cemetery, Blue Island.
