Johnnie T. Abel, lovingly known as “Papa John,” 77, of South Bend, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, IN. He was born on December 31, 1948, and had a sister, Valerie Abel.
Johnnie is survived by his ADEC family and his family at the Mackey House who all loved him immensely.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart. A service will take place at the funeral home following the visitation at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jeremy Sarber officiating. A graveside service will follow at Little Pine Cemetery where Johnnie will be laid to rest.
Johnnie was a kind and independent man who lived life to it’s fullest. He remained always on the go and could walk circles around his ADEC brothers and sisters, often taking the lead on group walks in the park. Johnnie was affectionate and enjoyed giving hugs to his caregivers and friends. Music was always a big part of his life. When Johnnie was younger, he enjoyed attending the World Pulse Festivals and loved listening to his friends sing karaoke (unless he did not like the song, which he would be quick to let you know).
Johnnie enjoyed breakfast with his family, oatmeal was his favorite and he would often ask for seconds (even thirds if you let him). He had an ornery streak about him, he enjoyed making others think he was reliant on them, and he loved to “air box” with his UFC boxing gloves. Although Johnnie could be a little mischievous, he had a heart of gold and a smile that could light up any room. He will be dearly missed.
