Obituary

John William Simpson, 76, of Elkhart, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at his home.

John was born on July 9, 1949 in Lincoln, NE to the late, Harold D. Simpson and Clara (Hitz) Simpson. He married Linda Kay (Olsen) Simpson on May 29, 1970 in Lincoln, NE.

John is preceded in death by his brother, Roger (Sue) Simpson.

John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda Kay Simpson of Elkhart; children, Heath William (Kelly) Simpson and Jennifer Kay (Paul) Jordan; grandchildren, Grant Simpson, Maddison (Tony) Gray, Emma (Skylar) Schumacher, Dustin Smith, Sophia Jordan and Benjamin Jordan; great grandson, Miles Gray; brothers, Harold (Lavonne) Simpson, Tom (Dorothy) Simpson and Jim (Charlene) Simpson; and sister, Marge (Ron) Daniel.

After high school, John honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War where he worked in avionics.

During his life, John lived in Lincoln NE, Seward NE, Plymouth IN, Battle Creek MI, and finally settled in Elkhart, IN for the past 13 years.

John started out as an electrician and moved up to many different positions at Walker Manufacturing (Tenneco) for 25 years. He worked at a few other places as manufacturing manager and plant manager before retiring. During his retirement, John was a school bus driver in Michigan and he delivered furniture part time for Atlantis Furniture in Elkhart.

In his spare time, John enjoyed reading, going to movies, fixing and building projects at home and going out to eat. He had a great sense of humor and a wonderful laugh. He also enjoyed being outdoors hunting, fishing, camping and hiking.

John was dedicated to his personal fitness routine, going to the gym daily for decades. He also competed as a runner in many races.

John was a very disciplined person and showed leadership in everything he did. He was a man that could always be counted on.

A Memorial Service for John will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 10, 2025 at Faith Lutheran Church, 202 S. Greene Road, Goshen, IN 46526 with Pastor Jessica King officiating.

A Celebration of Life for the family in Nebraska will be held in early November. Details are still being determined.

Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, IN 46514 is assisting the family.
