ELKHART -- John F. McCabe, 79, of Elkhart, died at 1:02 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 6, 2008) in Elkhart General Hospital, apparently of a heart attack.

He was born Sept. 7, 1929, in Boston, Mass., to Charles P. and Marie E. (Cresta) McCabe. On Oct. 14, 1951, he married Marie M. Miller in Waltham, Mass.

She survives along with one daughter, Sherrie McCabe of Indianapolis; one brother, "Buddy" McCabe of Boston; and one sister, Betty McTigh of Waltham.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul McCabe.

Mr. McCabe had a long career in the manufacturing industry in Elkhart, Ohio and California. He was a 1947 graduate of St. Charles High School, Waltham, and attended the University of Notre Dame, of which he was an avid fan. He loved his family, work and animals.

Mr. McCabe was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

Friends may call one hour prior to Saturday's 10 a.m. memorial service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. The Rev. Tom Thews of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Cremation has taken place.
