ELKHART — John G. Irwin, 82, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, at Millers Merry Manor.
He was born June 28, 1932, in Nottoway County, Va., to the late Earl and Theodore "Rose" (Austin) Irwin.
He married Annie R. "Faye" Flynn on July 14, 1958, in Elkhart. She passed away March 16, 2013.
Surviving are three sons, Johnny (Tamra) Irwin, David Irwin and Robert Irwin, all of Elkhart; his daughter, Rose Irwin of Jones, Mich.; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Seamster of Virginia and Charlotte (Tom) Lay of Elkhart.
He was preceded in death by a son, Thurlow Irwin; a granddaughter, Nicole Irwin; sister Marie Tidd; and two brothers, Frank and George Irwin.
John retired from Federal Paperboard after 30 years of service.
He served in the Virginia National Guard for four years prior to his active duty during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1956. He then served in the Air Force reserves until 1960.
He was a member of Life Tabernacle Church in Elkhart.
John enjoyed woodworking, bird-watching and building model airplanes.
Visitation will start at 11 a.m. Firday, Jan. 2, at Life Tabernacle Church, 1135 Middlebury St., Elkhart, and a funeral service for John will begin at 1 p.m. Pastor Mark Johnson will officiate.
Burial will follow at Prairie Street Cemetery, where military honors will be rendered by the U.S Air Force Honor Guard and DAV Chapter 19.
John's family is under the care of Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart.
