ELKHART — Retired Elkhart Police Office John H. Drexler, 69, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday afternoon at Elkhart General Hospital after a sudden illness.
John was born Aug. 16, 1942, in Elkhart to the late Rudy and Elaine (Hardman) Drexler Sr. He married Eileen R. Connor on June 3, 1988.
She survives, as well as his son, Chris (Shelly) Drexler of Grayson, Ga.; three grandchildren, Andy, Dillon and Christopher; and his brother Rudy (Pat) Drexler Jr. of Elkhart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Drexler.
John was a police office with the city of Elkhart from Jan. 1, 1969, until he retired on Jan. 9, 1995. He was a 1962 graduate of Elkhart High School. He enjoyed visiting Tennessee and the Smokey Mountains. John also like to fish and was an avid dog lover. He loved to banter with people and had a quick wit.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Services to celebrate John's life will begin at 11 a.m., with visitation for one hour prior on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Adamsville Road Church of God, 51287 C.R. 7 N., Elkhart. Barney Fultz will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Rice Cemetery, where Elkhart Police Department honors will be rendered.
