ELKHART — Dr. John P. Dobrowolski Ph.D., 73, of Elkhart and formerly of Texas, passed away after a four-month battle with cancer Friday, Feb. 21, at East Lake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
John was born May 9, 1940, in Pittsburgh to the late John J. and Catherine (Supinsky) Dobrowolski.
John is survived by a loving sister and brother-in-law, Teresa (John) Schultz of Elkhart; four nieces, Patty Bowers of Elkhart, Pam (Roark) Jones of Elkhart, Carla (Alex) Stone of Hammond and Monica (Eric) Stone of Hampton, Va. Several great-nieces; great-nephews; great-great-nieces; great-great-nephews; his special friend, Carol "Kaki" Doogs of Fort Worth; and his loyal pet friend, Miss Kitty, survive John as well.
After graduating from high school, John joined the U.S. Navy, from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1962, where he served aboard the USS Saufley. He then graduated from Penn State University and went on to get a doctorate in business and accounting.
John was a lifelong CPA and traveled extensively around the world on many business endeavors. John was an avid sports fan, especially of his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, and he enjoyed playing baseball and softball. John was a huge movie buff and enjoyed collecting antiques. He loved anything pirate or sailing ship related.
Services celebrating the life of John P. Dobrowolski will begin at 3 p.m. with visitation for an hour prior Tuesday, March 4, at Billings Funeral Home 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Father Jason Frieburger will officiate. Military honors by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honor Guard and Elkhart DAV chapter 19 will be rendered at the conclusion of the service at the funeral home. Cremation has taken place. Private committal services of his cremated remains will be in the Veterans Tower at Prairie Street Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be given to either the Humane Society of Elkhart County or Hospice Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
