Joan I. Smith, 92, of Elkhart, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Elkhart Meadows. She was born in Elkhart on October 27, 1929, to the late Robert Earnhart and the late Irene (Ruch) Pattee.

Joan is also preceded in death by her stepfather, Louis Pattee; loving husband who passed away on February 19, 2014, Glenn E. Smith; daughter, Debbie K. Rethlake; and brothers, Richard and Alan Pattee. She is survived by her daughters, Vicki L. Smith and Julie A. (Lynn) Woodiwiss; grandchildren, Drew and Holly (Carter Kaminski) Woodiwiss; and son in law, Stephen Rethlake.

Per Joan's wishes, cremation was chosen and will take place at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart. A private family graveside service will take place at Sugar Grove Cemetery at a later date with Pastor Jeremy Sarber officiating.

Joan was a sweet and social lady who enjoyed the company of those around her. She married the love of her life, Glenn, on September 23, 1950, with whom she spent 63 wonderful years alongside before his passing. Joan worked as a lunch lady and custodian for Concord Community Schools before retiring. One of her favorite hobbies was collecting antiques such as glassware, wood furniture (especially anything oak), teddy bears, and Mickey Mouse figurines. She also enjoyed collecting Santa Clauses so she could decorate the house in preparation for Christmas. Joan's grandchildren meant the world to her, and she was always proud of everything they did. She will be greatly missed by her loving family.
