ELKHART — Joan J. Smith, 82, of Elkhart, passed away Friday afternoon, Oct. 28, at Eastlake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born on Aug. 2, 1934, in Elkhart, the daughter of the late John R. and Mary T. (Oberts) Smith.
In addition to her parents, two sisters, Alice Chrisman and Patricia Yeakey, preceded her in death.
Joan is survived by her adopted family, Jack and Lee Stone; their children, Linda (Tom) Love, Greg (Lynn) Stone and Diane Faus; nieces Julie Hamlin and Cindy Dudding; and all her friends at Eastlake, where she has resided since 1996.
Joan was a 1952 graduate of Elkhart High School. After graduation, she began her 40-year career in banking, starting at St. Joseph Valley Bank and retiring from NBD Bank. Joan worked mainly in mortgage loans, the trust department and at the data center. Joan was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. At Eastlake, she helped to give communion and was very active there over the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with visitation starting one hour prior at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. The Rev. Jason Freiberger will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Vincent Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, kindly direct memorials in Joan's name to the Elkhart Co. humane society or Center for Hospice Care. Billings Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and honored to celebrate the life of Joan with family and friends.
