Flynn

Obituary

Mrs. Jinx Elaine Flynn, 78, of Edwardsburg, Michigan, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Monday, April 14, 2025, at 2:20 p.m. She was surrounded by her family and the comforting memories of a life well lived.

Jinx was born on July 15, 1946, in the quiet town of Delong, Indiana, to the late Wayne H. and Ferne M. (Rensberger) Hiland. Her name may have been Jinx, but she was anything but unlucky — she was a beacon of light, laughter, and love in the lives of those who knew her.

She is now reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband of 55 years, Michael J. Flynn, who passed away in July of 2020. Their love was the kind that weathered time, trials, and triumphs — a true partnership built on devotion, humor, and an unshakable bond. They were an inseparable pair in life, and we take comfort in imagining Michael waiting with open arms at Heaven's gate, ready to welcome his beautiful Jinx home at last.

In addition to her husband and parents, Jinx was preceded in death by her brother Jim Hiland and her sister Janice Selner, who now welcome her into their eternal embrace.

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Michaele "Shelly" DeSchepper of Elkhart, Indiana and Kimberly "Kim" Flynn of Edwardsburg — both of whom inherited their mother's strength, heart, and fierce loyalty. She is also survived by her sisters Beverley (Harry) Ernsberger of Elkhart and Wanda (Jerome) Holderman of Edwardsburg, who shared with Jinx a lifetime of sisterhood, laughter, and family traditions.

Her grandchildren, Robert A. DeSchepper, III and Michael A. (Lacee) Bartolini, both of Elkhart, were her pride and joy, and her great-granddaughters, Farrah L. and Gianna L. Bartolini, brought immeasurable happiness and endless stories to share. In addition to her immediate family, Jinx leaves behind a wide and loving circle of extended family and friends who will miss her vivacious spirit, comforting presence, and sharp wit — not to mention her loyal dachshund, Sarge, who loved Jinx very much.

A Celebration of Life honoring Jinx will take place on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Elkhart. Friends and family are welcome to gather beginning at 12:00 noon to share memories and fellowship. The Reverend Jeremy Sarber will officiate, and Jinx will be laid to rest beside her beloved Michael at Adamsville Cemetery in Edwardsburg.

Though Jinx spent much of her working life in retail, her true calling was at home —with a boundless capacity to care for anyone in need of a little extra love and comfort. It was her gift, her superpower, and she shared it generously. She had a heart that would lead her to help anyone in need.

Jinx had a natural flair for sewing and crafting, and she possessed the uncanny ability to coax even the most neglected houseplant back to life. She had a passion for estate sales, a deep affection for animals of all kinds, and a soft spot for televised shopping (especially QVC and HSN). And then there was her cooking — oh, her cooking! From melt-in-your-mouth homemade beef and noodles to legendary cookies and yummy pasta salads, her kitchen creations brought people together, filled bellies, and warmed hearts.

A woman of deep faith and quiet resilience, Jinx met life's challenges with courage and grace. Her Christian beliefs sustained her through hard times and infused her life with joy, gratitude, and purpose. Her favorite motto could have easily been: "Small but mighty." And mighty she was — in spirit, in strength, in love.

To know Jinx was to be welcomed, to be fed, to be hugged tight, and to be told (sometimes with a little sass) exactly what you needed to hear. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the family she cherished, and the memories she leaves behind — stitched lovingly into the hearts of those lucky enough to call her Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, or Friend.

The family encourages you to do something kind for someone else — buy a plant and bring it back to life, adopt a pet, or just spend a little more time with the ones you love. That's how Jinx would have wanted to be remembered. And in Jinx's memory, donations may be made out to the Humane Society of Elkhart County.
