He was born Aug. 6, 1941, in Elwood, Ind., to Jack and Velma (Sosbe) Hurd. His first two wives were Patricia J. Clace and Donna M. Soderbloom, both of whom survive and are the mothers of his surviving daughters, Tracy (Shawn) Kilmer of Elkhart and Brandie Hurd of Bristol, Ind.
He is also survived by his companion, Betty Lipps of Punta Gorda; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Dave Slayton of Elkhart and Jerry Hurd of Summerville, S.C.
Friends may call two hours prior to the noon Monday, May 7, memorial service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor Dale Turner will officiate. Graveside military rites in Prairie Street Cemetery following the service will be conducted by Elkhart's DAV 19 and the U.S. Navy Funeral Honor Guard. Cremation has taken place in Florida. Billings Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Mr. Hurd spent more than 35 years as a cable splicer for GTE (now Verizon) in Elkhart. He was a member of DAV 19 of Elkhart, Moose Lodge 599 of Elkhart and the Punta Gorda VFW. He enjoyed life to its fullest and also enjoyed dancing, fishing, boating and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Hurd was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in the early 1960s aboard the destroyer-escort USS Claud Jones (DE-1033).
