ELKHART — Jewell Verdell Pickens, 86, of Elkhart, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at her residence.
She was born April 24, 1926, in Morris Chapel, Tenn., to Gilbert J. and Florence (Johnson) Newman.
On Jan. 1, 1946, she married the late Floyd H. "Bill" Pickens, who passed away Dec. 21, 1998.
Survivors include three sons, George L. (Kathy) Pickens of Bristol, James E. (Delores) Pickens of Elkhart and Roger D. (Cindy) Pickens of Mishawaka; daughter Wanda (Jerry) Jele of Longmont, Colo.; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; and two great-stepgrandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Roxie Lee McCullough, and a brother, Aulsey Edward Newman.
Jewell was a lifetime member of Elkhart County Community Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing and listening to bluegrass and gospel music, sewing, crocheting, canning her garden vegetables and reading her Bible.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the 1 p.m. funeral service Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor Ed Ritchie will officiate. Interment will follow at Olive Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
