ELKHART -- Jerry Cline Sims, 60, of 2600 Morehouse Ave., died Sunday (June 1, 2008) in Elkhart General Hospital.

He was born Dec. 15, 1947, in Andrews, N.C., to Cline and Mamie Gertrude (West) Sims.

Mr. Sims is survived by one son, Brian Sims of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Teresa Sims of Elkhart and Lisa Sims of South Bend; four grandchildren; and one sister, Carolyn of Andrews.

He worked as a truck driver for Roadway Express Inc., South Bend terminal. He also drove for Steel Warehouse Co., South Bend, until health issues forced his early retirement.

Mr. Sims was a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran, serving from 1968 until he was honorably discharged in 1970 with the rank of sergeant. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and two Bronze Stars.

A gathering of friends will be from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Cremation will follow and interment will be at a later date in the veterans' tower in Prairie Street Cemetery.
