EDWARDSBURG, Mich. — Jeannetta B. "Jan" Hitt, 88, of Edwardsburg, passed away Jan. 3, 2013, at Elkhart (Ind.) General Hospital.
Jan was born Aug. 17, 1924, in Shelburn, Ind., to the late John and Bessie (Willie) Umstead. She married Lloyd E. Hitt on Feb. 29, 1980. He died May 29, 2005.
Surviving are her daughters, Donna Cooper and Gayle (Lyle) Haws, both of Elkhart; grandchildren Denise Rodewald and Ron Fancher, James Ray, Steven Ray, David Ray, Jared (Nicole) Horvath and Jason (Tammy) Horvath; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two stepdaughters, Harriet "Candy" (Dwayne) Kind and Shirley Jones, both of South Bend, Ind.
Several brothers and sisters preceded Jan in death.
Jan formerly worked as a secretary in the offices of Valley Machine Products in Elkhart from which she retired. She was a Concord High School graduate. Jan and her husband, Lloyd, did security work and she was a member and employee of Elkhart Moose Lodge 599. Jan loved doing crafts and painting.
A service to celebrate Jan's life will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Father Daniel Repp of St. John's Episcopal Church will officiate. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place.
