Obituary
ELKHART — Jeanne Darling Nesbitt was born Oct. 25, l924, to Gilbert G. and Hazel (Darling) Grootveld. She married Frederick W. Nesbitt Jr. on March 20, 1946, at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio. He died Jan. 13, 1993.
She is survived by their children, Diane E. Long of Fort Myers, Fla., Jeannette D. (Clarence) Radford and Fred W. Nesbitt III (LaDene), and a niece, Marilyn (William) VanPatten, all of Elkhart; a sister-in-law, Doris Cooke of New Port Richie, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Her parents, brothers Gilbert and Richard Grootveld, and sister, Ruth Hosack Crain, preceded her in death. There also was a sister, Margaret Ann Grootveld, who drowned before Mrs. Nesbitt was born.
Jeanne graduated from Elkhart High School in 1942 and attended Indiana University, where she was affiliated with Alpha Chi Omega. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She volunteered for and was president of the board of Child Health Association of Elkhart County, was a tutor through the Beardsley Elementary School program, and was a first-year president of the Gamma chapter of Tri Kappa. She and her husband were active in curling at Elcona County Club, serving three years as Curling Master and Mistress. She also served on the voting election board at the Riverview School precinct for more than 40 years, many of those years serving as the inspector. She was an astute bridge player, was very active in bridge clubs for more than 60 years, and belonged to the Friday Night Tripoli Group.
Friends may call for two hours prior to the 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, memorial service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice Foundation, 4220 Edison Lakes Parkway, Suite 120 Mishawaka, IN 46545 or Tri Kappa Alpha Rho chapter for scholarships.
