Jay Allen Merryfield, 63, passed away Saturday afternoon, June 25, 2022 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, after a sudden illness, surrounded by love and family. Jay was born on January 3, 1959 in Elkhart to Elgie Richard Merryfield and Margaret Jane (Sidney) Merryfield. Jay was preceded in death by his mother Margaret J. Merryfield, brother James R. "Jim" Merryfield and a grandson Luke Fager.
Jay is survived by his children, daughter, Tana M. (Justin) Elliott, two sons, Eddie (Laura) Merryfield and Kurt Merryfield; seven grandchildren; Leah (Spencer) Ellis, Natalie Fager, Sidney Merryfield, Emma Merryfield, Margaret Merryfield; twins Rogan and Royce Merryfield; and one great granddaughter Kendall Hazelip; also surviving is his father, Elgie R. Merryfield; brother, William "Bill" Merryfield and his sister Jennifer (Joe) Corpe.
Jay attended Rice Elementary School, Northside Junior High School and graduated with the class of 1977 from Elkhart Central High School. Jay was a gifted athlete and enjoyed playing and watching most sports, especially a round of golf with friends. He was a huge Notre Dame fan and enjoyed listening to Bob Marley and reggae music.
For many years, Jay was a caregiver for his father, mother, and grandmother, taking care of the house, yard, and many of their needs. He worked construction and was very handy in the trades. Jay was one of the good guys, very easygoing, who everyone liked and was fun to be around. He will be missed and is loved by many.
