Obituary

Janet Louise Mull, 92, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully of natural causes at the Hubbard Hill Retirement Community on Friday, April 4, 2025, at 5:55 p.m., surrounded in spirit by the love of her family.

Born on February 16, 1933, in South Bend, Indiana, Janet was the cherished daughter of the late John and Catherine (Koseff) Farrell, Sr. She grew up in a loving household alongside her brothers, learning the values of hard work, compassion, and faith that would guide her throughout her life.

Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ralph R. Mull; daughters Peggy Miller and Barbara Basham; and her brothers, James Farrell and John Farrell, Jr. While their loss left lasting marks on her heart, Janet carried their memories with grace and resilience, always finding strength in her unwavering faith and deep love for her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, who were the pride and joy of her life: David E. (Judy A.) Schutz and John L. (Dianne) Schutz, both of Elkhart; Kathleen "Kathy" (George) Soncrant of De Pere, Wisconsin: Ralph R. "Rick" Mull, Jr., Brent Y. Mull (Jean) and Jennifer M. (David) Criswell of Lafayette. Janet also leaves behind 14 grandchildren and a loving host of great-grandchildren, each of whom brought light to her later years and kept her young at heart.

Janet retired after a lifelong career in Human Resources, most notably spending over two decades with Miles Laboratories in Elkhart. Her work was more than a profession—it was a reflection of her genuine interest in others. She had a quiet ability to listen, guide, and support those around her, always with humility and grace.

A woman of many talents and interests, Janet had a passion for music and could often be found at the piano, joyfully playing tunes entirely by ear. She loved to dance—especially square dancing—and was always ready to teach others the steps, even if they didn't quite have her rhythm. She was also a card enthusiast, with a particular fondness (and reputation) for her skill in Euchre. Her laughter around the card table was infectious, and her competitive streak made every game memorable.

Janet was also an adventurous traveler, finding joy in exploring the world with Ralph by her side. Together, they created treasured memories in countries like Italy, Mexico and Spain with yearly pilgrimages to Gulf Shores, Alabama that spanned 28 years.—journeys filled with curiosity, laughter, and appreciation for different cultures.

A devout Christian, Janet was deeply rooted in her faith. She grew up attending Jamestown United Methodist Church and later became a devoted member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church. Though she never sought the spotlight or held formal positions within the church, she quietly and faithfully gave her time, especially through her involvement in Vacation Bible School. In earlier years, she also served as a Cub Scout Den Mother—another testament to her nurturing spirit and belief in supporting young people.

Those who knew Janet will remember her for her kind heart, her quiet strength, and her unwavering love for her family. She lived with humility, found joy in the simple things, and touched more lives than she likely ever realized.

In accordance with Janet's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Hillcrest United Methodist Church, 4206 East Bristol Street in Elkhart. A service celebrating Janet's life will follow at 3:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Tracy R. Rose-Love. Her cremains will be laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola in the days to follow.

Though she has departed from this world, the legacy of Janet Louise Mull lives on—in the music of a piano, the laughter around a card table, the kindness of a helping hand, and the faith that binds generations together.
