ELKHART — James Robert Smith, 72, residing in Elkhart, passed away Monday morning, Jan. 13, in his home.
James was born on Dec. 5, 1941, in Anderson.
James is survived by his son, Aaron L. (Deidre) Smith of Elkhart.
James had been working security, most recently for Fairmont Homes in Nappanee, and in the past at Monaco Coach and Elkhart General Hospital. He formerly worked at Nichols Bakery in Elkhart for 17 years.
He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, serving on the USS Lake Champlain from 1960 until his honorable discharge in 1964. He then served as a naval reservist until 1966.
James enjoyed spending time with his son and his wife, Deidre, and loved a good doughnut.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation will take place at Altera Cremation Services under the care and direction of Billings Funeral Home. Placement of his cremated remains will take place at a future date in Veteran Towers in Prairie Street Cemetery, with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honor Guard.
