Obituary

James Dalton “Jim” Rader, Sr., 82, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at Elkhart General Hospital on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 4:14 p.m., following an illness borne with quiet strength and dignity. Surrounded by the love and presence of his family, Jim entered into eternal rest, confident in the promises of his Lord and Savior.

Jim was born on April 15, 1943, in Mishawaka, Indiana, the beloved son of Eldred D. and Edna J. (Roberts) Rader. He was raised with strong values rooted in faith, hard work, and service to others—principles that guided him throughout his life. While his parents preceded him in death, Jim was blessed with a devoted marriage and a family that brought him great joy. His beloved wife of many years, Euda A. (Kufledt) Rader, survives him at home and was his constant companion, encourager, and greatest earthly blessing.

Jim leaves behind his son, James “Jim” Rader, Jr. of Appleton, Wisconsin, and his daughter, Cynthia L. “Cindy” Waggoner of Elkhart. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Jane Hiles of Elkhart, Kay Joanne Ringenberg of Pauline, South Carolina, and Connie June (Leroy) Fowler of Elkhart. Jim was a proud and loving grandfather to Jody (Nate), Ben (Ina), Thomas, Heather (Walter), David, and Rebekah, and a cherished great-grandfather to Ethan, William, Peyton, and Nova, each of whom brought light and laughter into his life. He is further survived by a large extended family, many dear friends, and his treasured church family. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Grace M. Rader Curtis and Eva Rader Konrath, his son in law, Darryl Waggoner, and a granddaughter, Melanie.

A proud union pipefitter with Fort Wayne Local #166, Jim devoted nearly seven decades of his life to his craft. His work ethic was unmatched, his integrity unwavering, and his skill respected by all who worked alongside him. Over the years, he contributed to countless projects throughout the region, including work for institutions such as the Elkhart Clinic and Miles Laboratories. Just as important to Jim as the work itself was the opportunity to train and mentor apprentice pipefitters, passing on not only technical knowledge, but also lessons in responsibility, discipline, and pride in a job well done.

Outside of work, Jim found great joy in God’s creation. He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman who cherished quiet moments outdoors. In his younger years, he enjoyed camping and bowling, often sharing bowling league nights with his wife—times filled with friendly competition and fond memories. Whether in the woods, by the water, or simply in his own backyard feeding squirrels and hummingbirds, Jim found peace in the simple blessings of life.

Above all else, Jim’s life was defined by his faith. He was a faithful and active member of Riverside Bible Church in Elkhart, where he eagerly attended worship services and Bible studies. His love for Scripture and his personal relationship with Jesus Christ were evident to all who knew him. Jim never missed an opportunity to share the Good News, offering encouragement, prayer, and testimony with genuine humility and joy. His children fondly remember that their father’s faith was not merely spoken, but lived daily through kindness, patience, and service.

Jim’s love extended well beyond his own family. He generously volunteered his time at local schools, helping children strengthen their reading skills, and also served with LoveWay, a therapeutic horseback riding program for individuals with developmental disabilities. He believed deeply in giving back, quietly serving others as an expression of his faith and gratitude for God’s blessings.

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart is assisting the family with arrangements. A service celebrating Jim’s life will be held there on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Joe Rager of Riverside Bible Church will officiate. In accordance with Jim’s wishes, burial will follow at Adamsville Cemetery in Adamsville, Michigan.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Waters of Wakarusa and Elkhart General Hospital for their compassionate, devoted, and attentive care during Jim’s time with them.

Jim Rader lived a life marked by faith, devotion, service, and love. While he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing that he has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and now rests peacefully in the presence of his Savior.
