ELKHART — James Franklin Hurt, 83, of Elkhart, passed away at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Elkhart General Hospital of natural causes.
He was born Oct. 20, 1928, in Huntingdon, Tenn., to the late Carral and Della (Brannick) Hurt. He married Ella Mae Barnett in Carroll County, Tenn. in July 1949. She survives.
Also left to cherish his memory are his sons, Charles F. (Rochelle) Hurt of Mishawaka, James E. (Sharon) Hurt of South Bend, and Richard L. (Ruthy) Hurt, Dennis E. Hurt and Danny R. Hurt, all of Elkhart. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
James was preceded by a grandson, Jermaine Jackson, and a granddaughter, Landera Hurt.
Services will be Friday, June 15, 2012, at Canaan Baptist Church, 933 Fieldhouse Ave., Elkhart, with visitation beginning one hour before the 1 p.m. funeral service. Pastor McNeal Stewart III will officiate. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola.
James worked at several area companies, including Conrail, Grady Foundry, the city of Elkhart's transportation and sanitation departments, Dodge Manufacturing and Coast RV, where he retired in 1990 due to health reasons. A talented singer, he belonged to several local quartets including the Pilgrim Rest Jubilee Quartet. He was also a member of the Canaan Baptist Church.
