Jan. 10, 1931 - July 25, 2011

ELKHART -- James Edward "Jim" Garber Sr., 80, of Elkhart, passed away after an extended illness at 4:35 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2011, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born in Rochester on Jan. 10, 1931, to the late Cecil and Mary (Markley) Garber. He married Bernice A. Lee on Dec. 18, 1948, in Mentone, who, after 62 years of marriage, survives him at home.

Also surviving are five sons, Larry (Kelli) Garber of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Mike, Terry, Tim (Tammy) and James Garber Jr. (Trish House), all of Elkhart; two daughters, Pat (Ron) Lantz and Deb Schuelke, both of Elkhart; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and his dogs, Oscar and Dotty.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Steven and David; a brother, Bob; and a nephew, Mike.

Jim worked more than 40 years at Homan Lumber, Elkhart, and another 11 years at local 7-Eleven stores.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the 1 p.m. funeral today, July 28, 2011, at Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart. Pastor Gary Sheets will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery, Elkhart.

Memorial contributions may be donated to the Center for Hospice.
