James "Jim"
C. Baker
March 4, 1929 – April 18, 2020
James C. "Jim" Baker, 91, passed away peacefully in the care of his family on Saturday, April 18, 2020. Jim was born on March 4, 1929 the son of Walter Craig and Ethel (Ellett) Baker. He grew up a small town country boy. He went to Stinesville High School for two years and then to Olivet to finish high school in 1947, that's where he met his future wife Esther. Jim enlisted in the Army in 1948. He made it to the rank of Sergeant with the 18th Infantry. He was sent to Germany after WWII as a peacekeeper, where he served his entire enlistment of 5 1/2 years. He came back to the states to marry his true love Esther Marie McClellan on September 1, 1951. He took her back to Germany with him until his honorable discharge in 1954. Jim worked at Miles Laboratories for 13 years, where he was a supervisor in the vitamin department and shipping. Jim also was the owner and operator of Baker Masonry and Baker Custom Draperies. He and Esther retired to Florida in the 1990s. He loved his church, Elkhart Northside Church of the Nazarene, where he served as a song leader, Sunday School Superintendent, church board trustee and a Sunday school teacher. He loved God and loved people. Jim is survived by 3 sons, Donald K. "Don" Baker (Carla), Ronnell D. "Ron" Baker and Jerel R. Baker. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren: Dalen, Angela, Brian, Jarena, and Kaala; 4 great grandchildren: Carson, Chloe, Kyleigh and Journey; as well as 2 brothers: John and Steve Baker. He was preceded in death by his wife Esther who passed on January 19, 2008; his parents and 5 sisters. In honoring his wishes, cremation was chosen, with a celebration of life service to be held at a later date. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Arrangements for Jim are under the care of Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart.
