UPDATE: A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Jim this Saturday, August 29, 2020 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1405 N. Main St. Elkhart. Reverend Jason Freiburger will officiate. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the mass. Entombment will follow at Rice Cemetery in the Hope Mausoleum.
ELKHART: James Allen "Jim" Weitz, 61, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, August 21, 2020 at Eastlake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. A native of Elkhart, Jim was born on Valentine's Day in 1959 to the late Robert E. and Dorothy (Walker) Weitz.
He is survived by his four siblings; Robert Weitz Jr. of Carmel, Thomas (Kathy) Weitz of Cleveland, David P. (Judy) Weitz of Elkhart and Mary Beth (James) Ash of Bonita Springs, Fla., Jim was a wonderful uncle and will be greatly missed his nieces and nephew Barbara (Brian) Thompson, Matthew Weitz and his fiancée Brittany Chipman and Amy (Jason) Grover as well as 7 great nieces and nephews.
Jim graduated from Elkhart Memorial High School and worked as a market representative for Sam's Club for many years. Jim loved all sports, especially Notre Dame; he also enjoyed reading and was very knowledgeable about sports and classic cars, and enjoyed talking with others about them. He knew player stats, player info, and all kinds of trivia about teams and cars.
He was a kind and gentle man and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Per his wishes, cremation was chosen under the care of Billings Funeral Home, Elkhart. The family is planning on services celebrating Jim's life at a future date. He will be laid to rest with his parents at Rice Cemetery.
