ELKHART -- Jack Lewis "Jake" Schweinzger, 80, of Elkhart, died at 1:30 p.m. Monday (March 10, 2008) in Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Niles, Mich., to Walter and Dorothy (Baker) Schweinzger. He married Phyllis Peterson on May 24, 1969, in South Bend.

She survives along with two sons, William (Robin) Schweinzger of Elkhart and Eric (Jane) Schweinzger of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three daughters, Kelley Schweinzger of Elkhart, Sara (Daryll) Atkinson of Saginaw, Mich., and Lynn Schweinzger of Niles; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Thomas (Barbara) Schweinzger of Marcellus, Mich.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., and one hour prior to Friday's 11 a.m. funeral service at the funeral home. The Rev. Mark Fenstermacher of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Cremation will follow the service, with burial in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, at a later date.

Mr. Schweinzger retired in 1997 as regional credit manager from The Selmer Co. After retirement, he worked part-time at Gustafson Lighting, Elkhart. He attended Michigan State University. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge.

He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. Mr. Schweinzger enjoyed listening to music and looked forward to attending the Elkhart Jazz Festival each year.
