ELKHART — Iwan Andabaka, 88, of Elkhart, passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, in Aurora, Ohio.
He was born on Dec. 27, 1923, in Drnis, Croatia, to the late Mile and Ana (Nakic) Andabaka.
He was preceded in death earlier this year by his wife of 50 years, Elfriede Theresia (Friedauer).
He is survived by his sons, Richard (Pam) Friedauer of Aurora and Peter (Brigitte) Andabaka of Berlin, Germany; granddaughters Christina (Steve) Tartabini of Twinsburg, Ohio, and Julie (Dave) Slisz of Aurora; grandsons Peter and Thomas Andabaka of Germany; and great-grandsons Tyler and Tommy Tartabini and Ryan and Jonathan Slisz.
Iwan had eight brothers and sisters who preceded him in death.
Mr. Andabaka has been a resident of Elkhart since 1958.
He worked at the Federal Paperboard Co. (formerly Continental Can Company) in Elkhart for 25 years, until his retirement in 1985.
Iwan loved his garden and was well know in the area for his tomatoes, garlic and especially lettuce. He was frequently mentioned on the Mike Maloney gardening show and was featured in an Elkhart Truth article about his gardening skills.
He was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago Bears fan.
Friends may visit with the family beginning at noon at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1108 S. Main St. Elkhart. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at the church. The Rev. John Eze will officiate.
Graveside services and burial will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery.
