ELKHART — Blanche Garver, 88, of Elkhart, passed away at Elkhart General Hospital from natural causes at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012.
She was born in Petoskey, Mich., on Nov. 27, 1923, to the late Melvin and Fern (Durham) Niswander. She married Jacob B. "Jake" Garver Sr. on Dec. 7, 1940, in Petoskey. He died in Elkhart in 2010.
Also preceding her in death were a son, Jake Jr; and brothers Richard and Melvin Niswander.
Surviving are her daughters, Ruth Ann (Ron) Sommer of Goshen and Linda (John) Curtiss of Mishawaka; a daughter-in-law, Rachel Garver of Jenison, Mich.; brothers James (Nadene) Niswander of Freeland, Mich., and Jack (Rachel) Niswander of Charlevoix, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, with visitation one hour prior at California Road Missionary Church, 29765 C.R. 12, Elkhart, with Pastor Bud Walterhouse officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
Blanche managed clothing stores in the Petoskey area for nearly 30 years, but later retired after 15 years at Martin's Supermarkets as a food demo representative. She was an active member of her church for many years, where she taught and involved herself in many of the church's activities. She also enjoyed working with ceramics, gardening and making the best chocolate chip cookies ever, as determined by her grandchildren.
