ELKHART -- Hugh F. Baskin Sr., 67, of Elkhart, died at 6:50 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 9, 2009) at home.

He was born Aug. 21, 1941, in Chickasaw County, Miss., to Eddie and Bertie Lou (Chandler) Baskin. On Aug. 11, 1998, he married Ernestine Harris in Elkhart.

Mrs. Baskin survives along with three sons, Dellis (Laura) Baskin of Goshen, Hugh Baskin Jr. of Elkhart and James H. Peacher Jr. of Indianapolis; one daughter, Belinda A. Baskin of Indianapolis; three stepsons, Anthony (Janet) Johnson, John (Louretha) Harris and Sherman Harris, all of Elkhart; two stepdaughters, Crystal (Jeff) Parker and Betty (Vernon) Jackson, both of Elkhart; nine grandchildren; 18 stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Emma Gordon of Elkhart, Linda (Charles) Conrad of St. Louis, Mo., and Beatrice (Ricky) Barnes and Earlene Baskin, both of Detroit; and one brother, Eddie E. Baskin, Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by five siblings, Eddie Ruth, Robert C. and Rex E. Baskin, Jennie Ruth Lewis and Bobbie J. Clarkson.

Mr. Baskin retired from the maintenance department at Walmart, Dunlap. He had worked for ADEC, was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening, especially raising his peppers and tomatoes.

Friends may call one hour prior to the noon funeral service on Friday at Community Missionary Baptist Church, 228 Chapman Ave., Elkhart. The Rev. Lefate Owens will officiate. A graveside committal service and burial will follow at Prairie Street Cemetery.
