Obituary

ELKHART — Hortensia Hernandez, 60, of Elkhart, passed away at Belltower Health and Rehabilitation of Granger on the afternoon of Thursday, May 17, 2018.

Hortensia was born Nov. 15, 1957, in Michoacán, Mexico, to the late Froylan and Luisa (Ascencio) Hernandez.

Before moving to the United States in 1987, she worked for 11 years as a nurse at the biggest hospital in Mexico City.

For the last 12 years, she worked at Greencroft Nursing Home in Goshen.

She married Robert J. Ramos on Jan. 12, 1996.

She was a very loving, kind and generous woman who loved spending time with her family and enjoyed gardening.

She was a great support to her family and friends, giving unselfishly.

She was committed to every patient she served over the years.

She worked until she could no longer walk, never letting her ailments get in the way of her commitments.

She loved her pets.

She is survived by her brothers, Francisco (Elizabeth) Hernandez of Mexico and Celso Hernandez of Elkhart; her sister, Felipa Hernandez of Elkhart; many nieces and nephews; and her dog, Frankie, whom she loved very much.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert J. Ramos.

The staff of Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart is honored to host a funeral service for Hortensia at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, with a viewing at 10 a.m. Graveside service will follow at Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to ALS Association of Indiana.
