ELKHART -- Hildegarde I. (Schmidt) Lauver, 91, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at 10:45 p.m. Saturday (July 3, 2010) at the home of her son, Tim Lauver.
She was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Midland, Mich., to Herman and Emma Kapanka, but lived her entire life in Elkhart, raised by her Aunt and Uncle Herman and Bertha Schmidt. She married L. Wayne Lauver on May 28, 1949, in Elkhart. He passed away May 7, 1991, in Elkhart.
Also preceding her in death was her son, Carl F. Lauver.
Surviving are one son, Tim (Leslie) Lauver of Elkhart; daughter Judy (Jeff) Trumble of LaPorte; and daughter-in-law Theresa Lauver of North Liberty. Eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren survive as well.
Hildegarde formerly worked at Selmer's as a secretary prior to her marriage to Wayne. Her faith and her family were central to her life. Hildegarde was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and enjoyed baking and canning, playing board games and was an avid reader.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday (July 9, 2010) at St. John's United Church of Christ, 2701 E. Bristol St., Elkhart, where a life celebration memorial service will begin at 5 p.m. The Rev. Donald Morgan of St. John's will officiate. At her request, cremation has taken place with burial at a later date at Rice Cemetery.
